Your point is well taken, but if you ask my relative whose acquisition "basis" on MAS in under 50 bucks, and he's now getting 4-5K per year in dividends on thousands of shares he never bought but acquired through stock splits, he would definitely argue with you.

And if I lose principal of 10 percent or so on my GNMA fund shares but continue to make 5-6-7- percent or so on yield in my IRA, why do I care what happens in the background? I'm not selling those shares any time soon.

....If you go around chasing yield you have to be aware that you frequently get that yield by risking loss of your principle...
