Your point is well taken, but if you ask my relative whose acquisition "basis" on MAS in under 50 bucks, and he's now getting 4-5K per year in dividends on thousands of shares he never bought but acquired through stock splits, he would definitely argue with you. And if I lose principal of 10 percent or so on my GNMA fund shares but continue to make 5-6-7- percent or so on yield in my IRA, why do I care what happens in the background? I'm not selling those shares any time soon.
