It's not important in itself, I'm aware. But it's almost touching to me that people are able to make themselves believe that the decisions being made are the product of Bush's cognition instead of his managers.

So you think there's a direct link between a person's accent and their cognitive ability? Any speech defect is proof positive of retardation?

Washington Post reported that Webster's lists "nucular" as an alternative pronunciation. They explained that alternative pronuciation doesn't mean it's proper, but enough people say it that way to make it part of the language. Eisenhower, Carter and Clinton all said "nucular."

My dad (from Mississippi) says "nucular" but I say nuclear.

Do a google search on nucular and some funny things pop up.

(You know, it may be a family thing more than a regional thing. What did Bush Sr. say, do you know?)

Another guess is that it's political, a kind of Mayor Richard Daley, the senior, thing. He was among the smartest politicians around but managed his public talk as if he was still just another Chicago ward guy. The story goes that in private circles, he dropped that lingo.

Bush has been known to change his accent, given his audience, not to have the accent of the audience, but to try to sound like just another good ol' boy.
