Self-sufficient poor people can be very honest since they have no stake in being dishonest. So farmers (who tend to be self-sufficient) may be poor but highly ethical. That's why Gandhi insisted on self-sufficiency.

Maybe, maybe not, but if true, Southerners are no more apt to do so than Northeners, are they?
