G*USA (the original service provider for Globalstar satellite service in CONUS) actually refused to aggressively pursue some of the most promising market segments for satellite service because the costs of providing service were greater than the forecasted revenue to be gained (due to anticipated subscriber use patterns). Likewise, handsets cost astronomically more than terrestrial cellular due to economies of scale where manufacturing was concerned (i.e. manufacturing for terrestrial handsets is now 'cheap' because of the size of the subscriber base which allows for product innovation and continued price reduction). Finally, in dense urban and urban environments, satellites do not provide reliable service due to shaddowing, in-building penetration, etc. Today the world faces extreme over saturation in the telecom industry...service is overly available and plentiful. Internet access is available on just about every street corner (where people have desire and ability to pay); just not in your personal headset or brain via a chip (g/ng).

What is the sustained competitive advantage/justification for overcoming all the technological/economic/political hurdles for developing satellite/terrestrial hybrid phones? Why should financial markets, devastated by recent experimentation in this market segment even bat an eye an any ideas for a new and improved satellite communications constellation/service?

In all honesty, what is the hypothetical business case for MSS? What might Craig McCaw be thinking? Is he over confident due to the overwhelming growth of terrestrial cellular and his own financial success (perhaps as much an illusion created by the crazy bull market as reality), or is there truly a revolutionary service to be created that will benefit society as never before?
