That's because the update included a program update, not just virus definitions.

I didn't restart, figuring it would finish the next time, but I don't think it did. It was trying to install from scratch again and wanted me to reboot. Guess there is no avoiding a reboot.

Another thing concerning AVG update...for the first time since I've been doing updates AVG asked me to restart the computer to install the newest update....never did that before. It always installed the new AV files without a reboot.
