I agree that the Russians would have easily take over all land in Afghanistan had the CIA not helped so much. But them having Afgan would not have triggered a nuke war, especially with Carter. And nothing else but time would have had them collapse, from the inside. Quite the same collapse, but more miitary will soon happen in Irak. It will take more time and effort than for Cheoucheskou of course, a month like, but his army will take him out soon enough. Remember that by now the US planes are possibly throwing billions of leaflets all over Irak. Graphical and self explanatory. And they Iraki guys had the experience of the first war. Especially the thousands of those who were prisoners. You can bet that they told everyone they knew how they were treated : " No Miser Prisonner, today is not BBQ, today is hamburger, yes, the Mac I Do, sorry: wartime; anyway Coke or Pepsi?" The only problem is that the bad guys can, during that war period try and succeed to do a lot of damage before crumbling, like a million US dead and the same in Israel. That is the unavoidable risk; As Congress HAS opened the Doors of War. "The Game has been played" ( St John Gospel) Not very different that when Athends did the same against Troya. Just that the reasons for action are much more compelling here... Of course, Saddam is ready for a deal. A deal that will secure his country against WMD. But you'll stay stuck with a great AL Qaeda base at his secret orders. And that's what the WH 4 don't accept and will not accept, nir much talk about that soon. So the air war may start within a week, less if the UN misplayes, more as many flat tops haven't arrived yet, and time is not so important, temperature, logistics are etc. And the probable ground scenario is that the ground war will be mainly conducted by the centrifuged Iraki armies that would have just turned their guns toward Bagdad. Finally if the WH gets some kind of confirmation that the shooting in MD is AQ connected, ( we won't be told) expect hostilities within hours afterwards and explanation of it just as fast.
