I can't even seem to find common ground; nor, I gather, can you. I was just, as I usually do, noting that we are at different places. Mine is twofold. First, since much of the posting forgets the settlement issue, which to me is central, I wanted to bring that up. And, second, it continues to look to me as if the zealots on both sides will soon control the political process (as opposed to the semi-zealots at the moment). If I'm right, and I certainly hope not, it gets worse. As I have said before, and you will probably agree, Sharon would be nuts to do anything before the Iraq dust settles. Bill, it's not at all clear to me that Sharon wants to do a deal or will get a chance to do a deal. On the latter point, the chance to do a deal, if the Islamists take over, there is certainly no deal there and part of the reason they will have power is because of the Sharon govt's actions. On the former, whether Sharon actually wants a deal even if he had the proverbial good partner to deal with, it's just not clear. A very strong case can be made that one of the strong currents in place right now on the Israeli side makes the two state solution more difficult. As in a continuation of the present political tilt. Had not seen that about Ambrose. An interesting thing there about our tastes. We tend to enjoy the same books, though, obviously, for different reasons. However, in this case, not so. I was never enamored of his stuff. Read a couple; can't recall which. They were ones he wrote in recent years. Friends have told me his earlier work was much better.
