A very difficult problem to deal with and one that I don't think we can solve with democracy, capitalism, socialism or limited militarism.Your points about US are valid as one who travels outside our borders realizes there is no poverty here. My opinion is an engagement with Iraq only buys time while galvanizing even more of the masses of poor against us.

My preference would be to wait and let one of our cities be nuked, then retaliate against Baghdad,Tehran,Cairo,Jakarta, etc. and eliminate 80% of them and solve the problem. Otherwise since Islam is a violent religion, the fastest growing, and the poorest, we are only kidding ourselves. If we are really lucky, one of their bio weapons will leak and kill off half their citizenry without hitting us too badly via the spread.

Prechter also has a chapter he calls the Fallacy of Potent Directors where he believes the Fed will not be able to prevent a credit crunch and the social consequences to follow. I apply this to our world leaders who talk the talk about poverty but fail to realize the hole the world is digging for itself. When you realize you are in a hole-1st Stop Digging. But then capitalism has always functioned with "growth" and we don't seem to be able to stop digging.
Too bad our leaders want political solutions instead of a legitimate attempt at resolution.

It is a privilege for me to tune in to your thread as notably sharp people are in residence here. I only wish I could pick stocks and time the trades as seemingly you do so effortlessly .
