The problem with occupation is all those civilians with guns. I'm reading a fascinating, if a bit wordy, book on the German atrocities of WW1, which had its roots in civilian resistance to an occupation force, but not in that war. Instead the German fear of civilian guerilla warriors was left over from the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. Eventually I'll comment on the similarities between that war, which saw the infamous Siege of Paris, and a prospective siege of Baghdad.
