If the reports are correct and this killer is using an AR-15 he could easily have an extra upper for it. As you probably know all the elements of forensics are in the upper (firing pin, chamber, extractor, and barrel.....the lower is the registered part with a serial #.

This is one of the problems with ballistics finger printing.
