I don't think that is the case at all. Different people get different things from books. I remember the role the Church played in that book and how it and Liebowitz were treated warmly by the author. But I also recall how silly, in an affectionate way, he looked to be "worshiping" a shopping list found in a lunch pail and the bloke to whom it was written. I read the book back when I wasn't as far removed from the Catholic Church as I am now and found it clarifying at the time.
