Carl, would you really like to know why the US dropped the M-14 .308 Winchester/NATO for the M-16 .223 Remington? It's #1 because with full metal jacket bullets the .223 does as much damage to a person as a .308. #2 the average soldier can't take advantage of the extended range of the .308.

This brings us to #3, the ammo is 1/2 the size and 1/2 the weight allowing a soldier to carry twice as much. #4 is the rifle is smaller, lighter and easier to carry and manufacture. Even Mattel toy company was making them.

The snipers, the guys doing the 1,000 yard shots, they still use bolt action .300 Winchester Magnums. The military match shooters at Camp Perry where the shoot standing at a 3' target at 1,000 yards use the .308 M-14.

Speaking of "cross-sectionals of humans", I read that one of the "cleverer" policeman was urging people to stand sideways so as to be a smaller target. Sideways to what.

I don't know nothin' 'bout firin' no weapons, bilow. My friend gave me the info I posted.
