However, if the individual is inclined toward a belief in his/her eternal soul, then consideration for any moral principle that circumstantially trumps materialistic benefits offers far greater rewards and is definitely in the self interest of the individual.

Whether or not one believes in an eternal soul, I think defining self-interest as materialism is invalid and/or short-sighted.
