I wouldn't define self-interest that way for myself, either, and you are well aware of my absence of belief.

Perhaps it's a difference in definition of materialism. Here's the one I'm using.

As I look to either side of my computer screen, I see thirty five year old bedroom furniture to the right and a fifteen inch TV that's at least ten years old to the left. I have five pairs of shoes, including my water shoes and hiking boots. How many women are there out there with five pairs of shoes? I think it's safe to say that I'm below average in materialism for an American.
