"Virtually everything we do has an element of self interest. Even wanting to please God has an element of self interest."

Yes. I agreed with you from the start that we are all operating purely on self interest. In my personal philosophy, I rank the condition of my soul above succeeding at worldly endeavors. As I said, we all seek some degree of satisfaction with materialistic comforts; and there is for many a tremendous cross over of being good and doing good and recieving rewards in this life time for your good efforts and character. Yet when push comes to shove moral principle trumps succeeding at worldly endeavors.

I didn't think I needed to give examples but I will try. I leave the warmth and peace of my home sacrafice my life taking action against injustice when it presents itself. I tell the truth to right a wrong, even though I risk losing my job. I make choices based on moral principle knowing that it will have a negative impact on my success at worldly endeavors, because it is good for my eternal soul. It is in my self interest to take care of my eternal soul.

As in: "For what if a man gain the whole world but lose his eternal soul."
