Through much of the middle ages the Church can take credit for nothing but the preservation of its own mythology and its own bureaucracy. And any bureaucracy will do that. The preservation of ancient knowledge was done mostly by the Arabs, not the Christians, through medieval times.

When the Christians started receiving this knowledge from the Arabs in the centuries following the Crusades, the Renaissance resulted.
