I think paying something, even if the amount is symbolic, would give all people a stake in this country, in the way it is run.

The liberal argument is, of course, that the payroll tax is regressive and therefore those minimum wage-earners are killed by taxes. This is correct; however, the rest of us are killed by taxes, too.

Personally, I believe the National Sales Tax is the most sensible solution. Having supported since the early days of the concept, I've yet to hear a cogent argument put forth against replacing the income tax with a NST. But it is politically undoable, so I'll never see it in my lifetime.

In fact, Bush's attempt at abolishing the Death Tax is one of the most valiant efforts I've seen to abolish a tax once it has been enacted. Even so, I doubt it will stick.
