The CD that came with the printer should also allow it to be used w/o downloading. Even on XP,,

You will get partial functionality. These are just the "Windows Standard" drivers:

From the website:

Features not supported by the drivers built into Windows XP

Integrated Optical Character Recognition (OCR) scanning
TWAIN scanning to an OCR program purchased separately will function correctly
Two-sided printing
Poster printing
Direct scanning using HP Picturescan or HP Precisionscan
The SCAN, SCAN TO, and/or START SCAN buttons found on some models of these product families will not function
Models with an automatic document feeder (ADF) will not be able to scan using the ADF
The HP all-in-one scanning software provided for Windows 2000
Use the front panel menu for maintenance features that were available in the HP Toolbox software

Not having the "toolbox" software was a real killer for me. It means that every basic setting now has to be done from the printer keypad rather than from a Windows program, and it's a major pain in the ass. Reminded me of what it took to set up my first (circa 1992) fax machine, with an array of difficult-to-understand menus, keypunches and entry of text information from a telephone keypad.

My all-in-one (G85) and my mom's (K80) did eventually get full-functioning drivers, but I almost trashed them for a different brand out of frustration with what it took every time I wanted to do some routine maintenance. Anything older than mine will never really be fully functional in XP.
