QUALCOMM Announces On-Time Sampling of MSM6300 Single-Chip 3G Solution for CDMA2000/GSM/GPRS

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM - News), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the on-time sample shipping of the MSM6300(TM) Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) chipset and system software. By integrating a GSM modem with a CDMA modem, the MSM6300 solution will enable manufacturers to design multimode handsets using previous single-mode form factors and will allow GSM carriers to deploy third-generation (3G) CDMA2000 networks that offer roaming across networks -- providing world travelers with a true global roaming phone. Sample shipments began on September 30, 2002.

"The MSM6300 chipset and system software will permit geographic roaming across CDMA, GSM and GPRS networks," said Don Schrock, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "The integration of GSM and GPRS with CDMA2000 is a world's first that again proves QUALCOMM's leadership in the industry."

The MSM6300 chipset is capable of supporting major world telecom standards, including the 3G EIA/TIA Interim Standard 2000 (IS-2000) Release 0 and Release A, with data rates of up to 307 kbps. The GSM and GPRS modem is based on Release 99 of the GSM and GPRS standard and supports a class B, multislot class 8, as well as EFR, FR, HR and AMR vocoders. As with all CDMA2000 MSM chipsets, the MSM6300 solution is backward compatible with IS-95A/B.

All QUALCOMM radio devices feature the Company's radioOne(TM) Zero Intermediate Frequency (ZIF) architecture, which eliminates the need for large Intermediate Frequency (IF) saw filters and additional IF circuitry. Eliminating these parts significantly reduces handset bill-of-materials (BOM), resulting in cost-effective multiband and multimode handsets that can be produced in smaller form factors.

The MSM6300 chipset includes the first-generation receive ZIF devices from QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies, the RFL6000(TM) and RFR6000(TM) chips, for CDMA2000 1X tri-mode with gpsOne(TM) position-location operation. The MSM6300 solution also includes the RTR6300(TM) chip, which integrates a full GSM/GPRS transceiver and a dual-band CDMA2000 1X transmitter. The RTR6300 chip enables the most integrated GSM/GPRS-to-1X roaming radio on the market. Power management functions, such as charging, voltage regulation and drivers, are handled by the PM6050(TM) chip.

Like all members of the MSM6xxx family, the MSM6300 solution supports selected features of QUALCOMM's Launchpad(TM) suite of advanced multimedia, connectivity, position location, user interface and removable storage functionality. These include Bluetooth(TM) connectivity capabilities, Qtunes(TM) MP3 player software and Compact Media Extension (CMX(TM)) MIDI-based multimedia software.

Also offered as part of the extensive Launchpad suite of applications is QUALCOMM's gpsOne position-location technology and the VectorOne(TM) compass interface. The gpsOne solution, featuring SnapTrack® technology, offers robust data availability under the most challenging conditions, whether in concrete-and-steel high-rises, convention centers, shopping malls or urban canyons. Using a hybrid approach that utilizes signals from both the GPS satellite constellation and from CDMA cell sites, the gpsOne solution enhances location services availability, accelerates the location determination process and provides better accuracy for callers, whether during emergency situations or while using GPS-enabled commercial applications.

The MSM6300 solution also supports QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(TM) (BREW(TM)) Application Programming Interface (API). With the BREWapi(TM), handset manufacturers and developers can develop both embedded and downloadable wireless applications and BREW-based products more quickly and easily.
