So the primary impetus for today's push (or at least a major one that set the futures off and running this morning) actually missed their quarter. I wonder where C would be if they announced a nickel shortfall.

Oral, I guess that this answers the question about the quality of their earnings. Nice bubble to pop.

09:21 ET Citigroup quality of earnings concerns - Pru (C) 34.14: Echoing Keefe Bruyette's comments yesterday (see archive), Prudential estimates that C earned $0.71 in operating earnings, $0.02 below consensus; co viewed a gain on the sale of its headquarters as core, yet firm says the classification of such a gain as if it were a recurring business activity appears to fall short of C's desire to exemplify "best practices" in corporate governance. Stock is rated Sell with a $28 price target.
