Dan, that's a well-reasoned article. If the guy were indeed an Islamic terrorist then it might help explain why he's not afraid of being caught or even killed as a "soldier". However, if his motivation is retribution for the innocent men, women, and children he claims the US has killed overseas, then I'd think he'd want to inflict as many casualties as possible as often as possible before being caught. It's the same rationale about why suicide bombers go to crowded areas or why bin Laden and others targeted airlines, ships, and tall buildings.
