Reform. Shame. Punishment. Those are all words for your scheme. Ostracism is a tool for punishment for those who are into that. For those who aren't, then it's simply associating with those with whom you prefer to associate and not bothering with the rest. If the party feels punished by the exclusion, that is his doing, not yours. You are not judging him immoral, merely taking steps to see that your five dollars stays in your wallet. The net effect may be the same. But the attitude is different.

I just finished reading a novel yesterday. I finished it over the infamous sashimi lunch. The book was a gift from a friend. In the last chapter, the protagonist observed that shame was narcissistic. I didn't recall ever seeing that idea before so I googled it between posts when I got home. There's quite a bit out there on it. I did not spend much time with it, but it was an interesting thought. FWIW.

I had lunch today with a friend with two middle-aged sons. I know his sons only slightly but they seen to be decent people. They are both successful and have nice families. I don't know how many times I have heard this friend say we should do what's smart--smart, not moral--so I imagine that that's the way he raised his kids. I don't know whether they experience shame or not. I don't imagine it much matters.

BTW, I had lunch near the Sunoco station in Manassas. It looked to be closed. All the bays were closed and there was no one pumping gas. I didn't see any yellow tape or a sign. I wonder how long it will be until business is back to normal.
