I feel bad when I don't meet my standards even when I have an excuse. I'm not as liberal on the excuses as you are. Perhaps that's a function of my not feeling a duty unless I have made a commitment. When people talk about acting smart (not moral), it is just a substitute for moral. You may subsume acting smart under moral as you do not being an ignoramus. That's not what my friend has in mind at all. There are only so many words in the language. We use them differently if we utilize them in different schemes.
