the number of guns is unrelated to the number of homicides

you are entitled to your opinion. but perhaps you would consider research from a source other than Trent Lott, the John Birch Society wannabe.

here's a library list:

Zimring, F.E. Is gun control likely to reduce violent killings? University of Chicago Law Review (1968) 35:21–37; Zimring, F.E. The medium is the message: Firearm calibre as a determinant of death from assault. Journal of Legal Studies (1972) 1:97–124; Cook, P.J. Robbery violence. Journal of Criminal Law & Criminology (1987) 70(2):357–76; Cook, P.J. The technology of personal violence. In Crime and Justice: An annual review of research. Vol. 14. M. Tonry, ed. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1991; Zimring, F.E., and Hawkins, G. Crime is not the problem: Lethal violence in America. New York: Oxford University Press, 1997; and Miller, M., and Hemenway, D. The relationship between firearms and suicide: A review of the literature. Aggression and Violent Behavior (1999) 4(1):59–75.

IMO, the number of guns is unrelated to the number of homicides.

so how would the Maryland sniper have critically injured 2 and killed 9 people and counting, even with 200 detectives, dozens of helicopters, the FBI and the entire US media searching for him, and with a half-million-dollar price on his head, if he didn't have a gun?. how would he have taken out that lady last night in the Home Depot parking lot and made a clean escape if there were no guns in this country? how would he have killed that father of six pumping gas the other day, with a cop less than 50 yards away, and made a clean escape, if he didn't have a gun? i guess if there were no guns he would have been a very good knife-thrower, lethal to 730 yards? how do you think they would have taken out Kennedy? how about the little six-year-old who shoots somebody?

there are over 30,000 firearm-related deaths a year in the US. in Canada, there are about 100 handgun murders a year. and you think the number of guns has nothing to do with it?
