With the theme of "Liquid Sunshine", Riches of Africa 2002 attracted more than 430 entrants who submitted over 1 200 designs. This year there was no distinction made between the entries from professional and student/amateur jewellery desginers: all were judged together. In addition, non-jewellers from other creative disciplines (graphic design, for instance) were encouraged to enter. The winning designs were chosen by a high-powered panel comprising professional jewellery designers, Lorraine Efune and Machant van Tonder; costume jewellery designer, Jenny Miller; top fashion designer, Julian; leading South African artist, Karel Nel; Thebe Ikalafeng, formerly of Nike SA; the editor of O Magazine, Taweni Gondwe; musician TK; the former brand manager of Levi, Tess Prins; and Martin Ammann of OroAfrica. The judges were most impressed with the standard of the final creations. Julian comments: "The Riches of Africa 2002 Collection is the most exquisite collection of gold jewellery I have ever seen. The innovation and workmanship is of world-class quality and AngloGold should be truly proud." "The blueprint of successful design lies in a vivid imagination; the boldly dramatic pieces in this competition bear testament to the fundamental creativity of our nation," says Machant van Tonder. This year the participants were specifically asked to design high-impact pieces. AngloGold’s Executive Marketing Director, Kelvin Williams, explains: "We were looking for big, bold gold jewellery – the kind of signature pieces that would light up a ramp and get people talking. Our intention is to interest top designers in using the jewellery in their shows and in fashion shoots for leading fashion magazines. In addition, this year’s collection should make for some dramatic exhibitions." Entrants were required to submit designs for three showpieces – two weighing up to 400 grams each and a third with a maximum weight of 200 grams – for the preliminary judging session. Here 24 winners were chosen – three professionals and 21 students. The manufactured pieces were then assessed according to six criteria – interpretation of the theme; originality; feasibility and functionality; aesthetic impact; quality of manufacture; and visual impact. After this selection process, an overall winner – Katleho Photolo, a third-year student in the Jewellery Department at Technikon Pretoria – was chosen. He will receive funding to the value of some R30 000 towards an education and career development programme. Katleho’s winning work is a neckpiece made of delicate, criss-crossing cast sections. He says his intention was to show "how the sun spreads its rays in different directions and saturates everything with its liquid warmth". The other successful participants in this year’s competition comprise professionals Chris de Beer, who heads up the Jewellery Department at the Durban Institute of Technology and who was also a winner in Riches of Africa 2001, and Jennifer Simon and Peta-Ann Morrison, who are both from Cape Town. Among the students, in addition to Katleho, there are a further eight from Technikon Pretoria: Christelle Groenewald, Ilze Jooste, Lukas Botha, Mariesa Hofmeyr, Renette Grobler, Renu Masilela, Sofia Vosloo, and Yvette Kuschke, who was also a winner in Riches of Africa 2001. Four are students at the Cape Technikon: De Wet Bekker, Emile Erasmus, Luzelle Botha and Xtine Coetzee. Adéle Rautenbach, Sile Louth and Tim Castelyn are all studying at Technikon Natal while Aline Balayer, Erica-Jane Moodie and Sanmari Hennop are from Stellenbosch University. Elna Snyman of Dragoni Goldsmith and Lianda Buitendag of the SA Goldsmith Academy complete the line-up. AngloGold established the Riches of Africa Competition to encourage innovative gold jewellery design and to use the event as a platform for promoting gold jewellery of African design and manufacture to national and international audiences. The Riches of Africa 2002 Collection will be exhibited throughout South Africa and around the world in the year ahead. ends Disclaimer Except for the historical information contained herein, there are matters discussed in this news release that are forward-looking statements.
