Check out Hardball right now on MSNBC...

They are debating whether Bush should fire his economic team and then Christopher Hitchens will talk about 'the death of the left'...=)

I'm much less interested in whether Sharon dubs it a success, most likely he will attempt to dub any outcome a "success," than in whether it increases the chances for a long term two state solution.

There will be no long term two state solution while Hamas and Hizbullah are running free. That's obvious. It would be good if Fatah was forced to smash Hamas but they've nurtured them too long for that, I would guess. As for Hizbullah, it would be open war now if the Americans weren't demanding quiet before the attack on Iraq. Did you read Jeff Goldberg's article on Hizbullah in the New Yorker? Really scary.

Unfortunately John, it's my opinion that the only way to peace in this situation is through war. Either Arafat is replaced by a moderate, secular government that can live with Israel - and destroy HAMAS and Islamic Jihad, or Arafat is replaced by HAMAS or some other Islamist militant group. Either way, the only way towards a lasting peace is open warfare with the militants of HAMAS et al. Until it is demonstrated that going down HAMAS' path is a dead ender, the Palestinians aren't going to ante up for a respectable, responsible solution.
