How to solve Alaska's budget crunch?

FYI it is time to elect a new governor in AK. AK is a tax haven, and for some yrs running has spent more than it has taken in. (I got my dividend this yr!!!, but it was close.)

Soon to be former US Senator Frank Murkowski (Republican) offered several suggestions how to solve the dilemma, w/o adding new taxes. We hate taxes up here, but love refunds.

A main idea put forth by Mr. Murkowski - The State Needs To Implement An Oil Hedging Program!

Unbelieveable, especially after all the market problems. These guys must all have been given labotemies (?), during their DC tour of duty.

Re the AK PFD refund it was 1500 odd bucks, and we have no sales tax, nor a state income tax. I understand it just about didn't come to pass, due to the July market dump. The net value (or some key figure) dropped below an allowable, which would have prevented distribution. Fortunately the end of July bounce saved the day. Heaven help the AK politicians when it runs out.

(Re spelling I haven't had a labotemy (?), just can't spell like I could when I was young. Losing brain cells I guess!)

I agree 100% on the terrible Arab leadership. Arafat indeed is a corrupt blood sucker. But the US generally ahs supported these tyrants and despots as long as they kept their people in line and provided cheap oil. The only problem with Hussein is that he is no longer following US orders as he did when engaged in a war against Iran in the 1980s. He is no more (or less) a despot than such pro-US regimes as Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

That is why I say the idea that the US favors real democracy in the Arab world is a fiction to put it mildly.
