Should, first scenario still, the transition make a secular based successor to Arafat much more palatable to the general Palestinian population, Hamas just might go quiet for a while.

"For a while" is the operative phrase. Unless HAMAS changes their tune 180 degrees and oh, I don't know, does something as small as calling Israel by name, they will be a violent alternative for Palestinian aspirations. I would argue John that in order for the final and complete solution to be arrived at, the Palestinians must be disavowed of any hope of victory by arms. As long as they can cling to the hope of a heroic Arab overthrow of the State of Israel, real peace will be hard to come by, IMO.
