He could be using the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle with a brass catcher, to retain the ejected cartridge. I suspect the cartridge left at the scene of the school shooting (which I believe is the only one collected so far?) was probably a plant, possibly by the shooter--just to screw with law enforcement.

If the shooter stepped out of the right side of the vehicle (from the driver's perspective), depending upon how far away he stepped he casing might have been ejected back into the vehicle. (They generally fly about four to six inches.)

He also may just have picked it up. You make a good point, though.

Hmmm...

It literally takes two seconds to check out license plate numbers. The fact "several" people reported them likely means the police already know who owns the van. Yet, of course, no arrest. This would most likely imply, as we suspected, the killers weren't afraid to be seen in the same Chevy Astro van because they weren't afraid of being associated with it. The other slight possibility is that they've fled. If so, I'd think the police would have not only released the tag numbers (in the event the van is missing as well), but the names and pictures of the suspects as well, not just a composite sketch.

The killer or killers could also have made up a fake plate and pasted it over the real one. A pretty elementary precaution.
