it's a question of self-interest.

I agree with you about self-interest. In the case of Afghanistan, we have it. We simply cannot allow it to return to Taliban and Al Quaeda rule. In the case of Iraq, we have a shared interest with other countries. Those other countries need to share in any price. However, I do not consider it immediate. Our immediate interest is eliminating Al Quaeda by killing them. I would not do it with overt military force. I would do it through death squads that just get the job done quietly.

As long as they leave westerners alone we don't care. That might sound a bit cynical.

Not cynical - just common sense.

As egomaniacal Kissinger let slip about the India/Paki conflict in May, "we don't have the answers to their problems".

What he didn't follow up with is that when the US gets involved in these foreign blood feuds, the fact of US involvement instantly becomes more significant to the players than their own disputes. It's suddently a game of money, military and political power and propaganda, run by the local warlords for the benefit of US warlords. It's great if you're a US warlord.

The Geopolitical Nintendo run by Washington against the wishes and interests of Americans is clearly about power and oil, with nothing whatever to do with the "interests" of the disputing parties. Nor with their health and well-being.
