A business does not have to grow for a company's share price to react to good or bad news related to a company at a point in time.

This is exactly what causes gapping. A business does have to grow to justify upward stock price appreciation. Something you perceive as good news for the company may never filter down to the bottom line. Thus, any price action related to that news would have been false and subsequently, the price action will be corrected if and when the "good news" does not appear in the bottom line.
