actually, the ICI just released a report showing the %age of households owning stocks is actually higher now than it was in 1999...some 57 + % i believe...mania top was only around 60%

also, recent equity allocation by money managers now exceeds 70% agn

sorry about that ICI/SIA info Paul, i just re-read the text, looks like the report stated "nearly 1/2 of all U.S. households, an estimated 52.7 million households strong, owned equities as the year began.

"The tally represents a 7.1% improvement, and 3.5 million MORE households than in January 1999, when the DOW was 18% higher".

Regardless, the report goes on to say that the ICI stats still show "near record long term bullishness"
