Well, at least you found something that affirmed he was identified as Lazarus. Given that he lives for millennia in the course of the story, it is clear that something miraculous is going on. Invoking Occam's razor, then, yes, there is a slight doubt that it is "the" Lazarus.

There is no doubt that it is the Catholic Church. Apart from having to relocate the Holy See, it had not changed dramatically. It was the pre- Vatican II Church, Latin and all, at the beginning of the book in about the condition that it had found itself after the fall of Rome. Miller had converted to Catholicism a few years before writing the first section, and completed the novel before Vatican II had changed much. Anyone with a passing acquaintance with Catholicism would recognize that it was meant to be the Church.....
