SAN JOSE--The book-to-bill ratio for semiconductors was 0.91 in September, slightly down from 0.92 in August, according to a report from VLSI Research Inc. here today.

The seasonal demand spurt that comes from the holiday season is expected to be weak. Consequently, the IC book-to-bill ratio is expected to drop to 0.87 in October, when bookings are forecasted at $9.45 billion and billings are at $10.89 billion, according to the San Jose-based market research firm.

Meanwhile, September bookings were at $9.52 billion and billings were at $10.51 billion, according to the report. In total, the worldwide semiconductor industry had bookings of $9.35 billion and billings of $10.19 billion for the month of August, according to VLSI Research.

The IC billings represent the average of WSTS sales data for July and August and VLSI Research's estimate for September.

There is some good news. VLSI Research claims that worldwide fab utilization rates increased from 87% in August, to 90% in September. In October, worldwide fab utilization rates are projected to hit 92%, according to the firm.
