LPS5, very well said. It's a sad fact that when things turn bad many people are all too willing to accept any lunatic's assurances that those responsible are *not* like "us". Right now there is a terrible anti-Muslim bias in this country. Even hinting that the killers might be such will bring out the "I told you so" crowd, followed by a wave of violence and discrimination against anyone who looks to fit the part.
