<< I shot expert with that one, but do not know how.>>

In "adult" years I've fired 5 examples of the M-1 Garand - one a cheap import knock-off - and all were accurate - 2 of them very accurate one of those exceptionally accurate - & none were a "heavy barrel" or "accurised" versions. Most shot better than most average off-shelf versions of the A3-03 in 06 but all fell (at the very least) a bit short of a GOOD Model 70 Winchester or 700 Remington in same caliber.

From what examples I've played with, the US military has enjoyed long arms that are mostly rather easy to be trained to shoot accurately - for their day - dating back through the 30-40 Craig. Some might even argue the same holds true above baseline version of the trap-door Springfield - for the 1st couple of shots. Problems always occur when people attempt to compare apples to oranges - newer to older or ....

I fired my 1st M-1 Garand at age 14 on a 250 yd range at a military school and "qualified" with 6 of 10 in the "X" after but 20 practice rounds. On a range the weight should be considered an asset. I've even seen people using them afield (choked back to the legal 3 rounds) and doing very well on deer hog & elk - despite the great weight.

btw, now that we have seen some claim the vehicle firing the .223 may have been the AK-74 should we consider dismissing claims of those here who would disparage members of the US the Armed Forces?

(off topic) Message from twilko... CNN is asking what people
would say to the killer to get him to give up?
.
Terry,
.
My thoughts have been unfocused on the sniper killings
this past week, but my feeling is that this person is not
similiar to past actions like the Son of Sam in N.Y. City
where a "local" person looks inside themselves and knows
that they can "accomplish" as in, obtain certain things that
is really off topic, but as many many of these people exist
today, as in all days, only when they decide to "touch" just
a little bit closer a certain place in their thoughts that they
always had a very clear and knowledgeable awareness of,
that once they go that last "forbidden" distance, then its
all over and they enter another existance from which there
is no return. They may stop the activity, but can never return
from where a place to us rest view as forbidden. Now with
that said i see this sniper not one of these people but a simple
freedom-fighter, warrior or soldier of the side the United States
has declared war onto, and he is inside enemy terrority and
is doing what any soldier in the enemy camp is doing, fighting
the enemy in an honorable manner towards his side. Now if
this is true and he is not the other many past examples in the
US we know about, then he will NOT end up as they do, which is
they continue doing their deed until unluck on them they get caught.
No, this person if a soldier will be prepared for the time when he
is caught and has a clear focus to take out as many of the enemy
as he can. Example, if he listens to the t.v. news saying that
the law enforcement is very near identifying him, as in in a couple
day he will be located, then he will stop his one shot sniper kill
and enter an area that contains many enemy, American people,
and open fire rapid fire with many reloads.
(or)
Really dumb the news media to hype this for ratings,
and the above end result of dozen(s) killed with his rifle
in a final battle will be their fault. Or he may simply obtain
a bomb and take out a hundred. If the media just reported
simple facts and not make it a 1/2 hour "special" then the
police would have more time to catch him if he does not think
that he will be soon caught.
