The difference is in the motivation. Terrorists have political goals which are too extreme to be achieved through the normal political process.

They do get an emotional payback, but that's not their only motivation.

Thrill killers, which includes mass murderers and serial killers (this case made me realize they are different), are motivated by the emotional charge, probably in this case dominance and control.

This killer so far exhibits a mixture of mass murderer and serial killer. Mass murderers are like the Columbine killers, they kill a lot of people at one time. Serial killers kill people one by one but are typically motivated by sexual desire as well as blood lust.

This person is very disciplined, although he appears to be slipping, as the killing on Monday was from only 35 yards away, in front of witnesses.

The woman he killed on Monday looks a lot like one of his first victims, an attractive woman with a lot of shiny blonde hair. He may have found her irresistable.

The Bali bombing is consistent with terrorism, as are the ones in the Philippines I just heard about on the radio. Public place, big bang, lots of dead people.

But who knows? I know the police are keeping an open mind.
