U.S. buyers back in the driver's seat
Thu 8:42am ET
After a one-day respite, good news from IBM gave buyers the upper hand once again. Giddy investors pushed stocks sharply higher in the pre-open, with the action presaging a solid open for the averages.

Yes they are giddy.
IBM
Revenue from continuing operations was $19.8 billion, nearly unchanged from the same period last year. Sales in the Americas fell 2 percent to $9 billion. Revenue from the Europe/MiddleEast/Africa region rose 1 percent to $5.7 billion. Asia-Pacific sales rose 3 percent to $4.3 billion

The sharp rise in per-share earnings despite a small drop in operating earnings comes because IBM bought back about 40 million shares on the open market since the same period a year ago.

O'Neill: Econ Recovering, Sectors Uneven
Wednesday October 16, 12:58 pm ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill said on Wednesday that the U.S. economy was progressing well but that it was uneven across sectors.
O'Neill told a forum held by the National Association of Manufacturers that based on his recent travels around the country, he believed that the "doom and gloom" views of the U.S. economy are not supported by reality.

"The evidence I've seen doesn't support doom and gloom. It supports what I tend to call the bumpy-road recovery," he said.

O'Neill did not comment on the U.S. dollar, a subject of key interest to U.S. manufacturers who complain its strength against other major currencies has hurt their profits.

This sector is showing growth and inflation

This is a totally giddy group we have here. IBM bought back about 40 million shares reduced shares count does equal higher earnings as well as lower loss per share.
Our labor rate is expensive our currency buys a bargain elsewhere. This is self explanatory.
