They are here to try to catch the criminals after they have committed a crime. The only person who can protect you is you, or someone you hire to do so.

And that has been stated in court. The police do not have an obligation. As Locke wrote, Want of a common judge with authority puts all men in a state of Nature; force without right upon a man's person makes a state of war both where there is, and is not, a common judge. Keep your 357 close, clean, and well oiled.

I wasn't talking about protection - if after 9 shootings and 7 deaths, the D.C. and Maryland police haven't a clue, I'd say this case is beyond their capabilities. They need the equivalent of Britain's Scotland Yard to take over, and I don't think it exists. That contributes to the climate of fear, as expressed in this article about the boy who was shot.
