Do you regard this as such an optimal solution that you would recommend it for the Persian Gulf, which is vitally strategic for us? The biggest reason the Mideast is vitally strategic for Americans is because of the oil reserves. If we are so dependent upon a commodity that we must invade, occupy, and reconstruct nearly one-fifth of the world's population then I say damn the oil and let's begin to modify our behavior and search for another alternative fuel source which will lead us away from these fringe lunatics in the Mideast. But you can guess why this isn't happening, and this is not a trick question. We have the money, the technology and the brain trust to develop this goal but we are lacking the political will. And it has cost us greatly.... in blood. The Islamic fundamentalists can be contained and deterred in my humble opinion, Nadine, but I have my doubts about whether we will ever be able to eliminate them completely without destroying ourselves in the process. Curious how the same people who loathed "MAD" as morally abhorrent while it was operating now are all for it in retrospect, don't you think If only this were true. MAD provided the cornerstone for American security during the cold war and has remained relevant today. It is the blueprint copied by the Israelis with their Samson option in the Mideast so really I don't understand your hostility here. I have never been morally abhorrent with MAD. It works so don't knock it which is something I cannot say about pre-emptive war.
