I agree in principle with what you said. I attempt to take things literally at first. The problem however is that the western mind is more prone to literal than was the Hebrew mind. Hebrews were a very "artistic" and "poetic" The Bible is a very poetic work. Some of the things witnessed in the Proverbs is not common in English at all. The LATIN VULGATE is a version of the bible that was translated into Latin and called such because men saw the Latin language as being quite "vulgar" compared to the accuracy and poetry of Hebrew and Greek. How much more English? If you wrote a book in English and insisted that someone translate it word for word into a foreign language - How would people know you were being figurative when you said things like "It was raining cats and dogs" of "He kicked the bucket" You can see that trying to be LITERAL could lead to problems even when you are talking about English being translated into a culture and time that has no idea what is meant by such statements. Here is a question for you that you may find fun. In Revelation it says this: Revelation 6:15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; 16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: If one was to take this as literal you would have kings - talking to rocks - fearing angry sheep. Some futurists would say don't be stupid elect. Well actually all futurist say that but these would say that "everyone knows" that the lamb is figurative for Christ. And "everyone knows" that they are hoping not saying to the rocks to fall on them. The rocks and the caves are however very real. Well lets look just a little earlier: Rev 6:13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. Here is my question if in verse 13 all the stars (suns) collided with the earth - where do we find rocks to fall on anyone? My question is concerning verse 16 WHAT ROCKS? ... or what men for that matter. I hope you find all of that amusing :-)
