E.Charters,
That is what my memory told me. Should have had confidence in what I remembered. Did not realize that the AK47 came in two flavors though. I had an AR15, but changed over to an M1 for a while. Carried an AK47 for a while too, but forgot where I got the ammo. Loved the KAKAKAK of that weapon. Sure would never mistake it for anything else. Always knew when Charlie was cutting loose.

Thanks for giving that info.
Now for me the info I seek is practically complete!

So the gun dealers and gunsmiths who told me that NATO ammo or modified 0.308 are usable in the AK47 were right.

What I didn't know was that the AK47s used in 'Nam had their chambers modified so that they can fire M1 ammo.

<<Also the AK47 came in two flavours, the long cartridge, which is close to the nato 308 and the short which is close to the M1>>

Think you're wrong on this one, believe you're thinking of the Dragunov which was chambered for the 7.62X54.

I find other chamberings for the AK. but these are the 5.45X39 or the 5.56 Nato.

If I had a Ak-47 that had the chamber opened up to fire the .308 I'd NEVER go back & shoot the 7.62X39 ammo in that rifle again! But then, I like my eyes - do as you wish.

Chamber pressure .308 Winchester
Max Pressure: 52,000 c.u.p.

See the note for the Galil this page:
"The change in caliber, from 7.62x39mm ComBloc to 5.56mm NATO, required numerous alterations. The AK-47's 4.2mm gas hole was reduced in diameter to 1.8mm. The Galil's most immediate predecessor was the Finnish Valmet M62 rifle and, in fact, early Galil prototypes were fabricated using M62 receivers made in Helsinki. However, as the 52,000 cup SAAMI (Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute) pressure limit specified for the 5.56mm NATO round is far greater than that developed by the 7.62x39mm ComBloc cartridge, Galili abandoned the pinned and riveted, stamped sheet-metal receiver of the Valmet M62/M76 series and went to a heavy milled forging.

NOTE DANGER
See MAX RECOMMENDED PRESSURE FOR RELOADING 7.62X39 from IMR
44400
43600
& this note:
"We suggest the charge weights shown be reduced initally by 10% to compensate for possible variations from the published data. The loads may then be increased as pressure indications permit."

This tells me there are SKS's & or AK-47's out there with CHEAP Chinese Steel used in the receivers / bolts that simply won't stand up to (maybe once maybe repeated) pressures seen in the 7.62 NATO!!!!

Would the shell extractor of the AK-47 even grab & remove the LARGER case?
