You asked, rhetorically I think, why would anyone cover any short.

There were plenty of technical reasons to cover shorts by Thursday, and certainly it was prudent to be on guard, just as there are good reasons to get back into those shorts positions today.

Three of the most obvious reasons that come to mind were:
- the large downward sloping wedge in the ndx daily chart
- 5 clearly defined waves off the August high on the dow and many stocks
- stochastics giving oversold readings on all timeframes.

What is a mystery to me is why so many were so complacent in their bearishness that they did not see these signs.
