Britain pulls out diplomats
From correspondents in London
18oct02
THE governments of Germany, Britain and Denmark have all advised their nationals to leave Indonesia, and Britain is pulling out non-essential diplomats.

British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said Britons should not travel to the country following the Bali bomb attack last Saturday in which 29 British nationals are thought to have died.

Straw said ministers had agreed that "we should advise against all travel to Indonesia, and also recommend to all British citizens to consider leaving Indonesia if their presence is not essential".

The German and Danish authorities issued similar advice, with the German foreign ministry in Berlin calling on its nationals in Indonesia to show "the greatest prudence and vigilance".

One German is known to have died in the explosion and seven are missing after the attack.

The Danish foreign ministry spoke of "a high level of threats against Western targets", partly as a result of the arrest of Indonesian religious leader Abu Bakar Bashir.

The ministry also called on Danes currently in the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand be on their guard when in public places, restaurants, bars, nightclubs and discotheques.

Three young Danes are still missing after the Bali attack.
