Answer, It didn't help anyone, and it undermined this country, and it reaped upon the people of Laos and Cambodia a horror that never would have happened had we simply not gone into Vietnam. Karen.. I'm sorry to tell you, but you are SO VERY WRONG.. The Pathet Lao insurgency was ongoing BEFORE US forces were engaged in the region.. In fact, it was the presence of communist insurgencies that dragged the US into creating a presence there.. These nations were newly independent and ripe for communist take over. And given that most were directly on the border with China, they served as wonderful "buffer states", and natural areas where China could extend its influence... Of couse, Hanoi was primarily supported by the Soviets, so there was rivalry between the USSR and China as well for influence in the region... Thus, there is just no reason to believe that these nations would not have fallen EVEN SOONER, had not the US made it apparent that the region was of strategic interest to the United States (shipping lanes, Australia,.. etc).. Finally, you should note that it was North Vietnam which FIRST violated the sovereignty of Laos and Cambodia, constructing the "Ho Chi Minh" trail through both of those countries... So to say that none of these tragedies would have occurred had the US not "interfered" is absolutely repugnant and intellectually dishonest... Maybe this was just the line of crap you were fed in school or you picked it up out of Rolling Stone... My god.. Karen... All you have to do is look at the lack of economic or social progress that has resulted in Vietnam since the departure of the US... And compare that with the progress of South KOREA, which has had a US presence.. That should tell you everything you need to know about who to blame for what.. Hawk
