If everybody was free to vote their will, it would have been different, I'm sure.

No, I do not think so. The Vietnamese people wanted to rule their own country. EOS. After being treated like dirt by the French. The USA was not helping in this matter.

It came down to a test of will power.

I still think the USA could have played some smarts and had Ho Chi Minh on their side with some diplomatic moves. When the Commies in Russia and China cramped HCM's style he would have looked towards a friendly west. He cared about his country imho. Well, rather..I think... IMO, no need for humble.

/edit. Some of the best human beings I ever met were guys who fought in Vietnam. Unfortunately some of them have passed on now. Some of those guys who fought there, sometimes whacked on the first mission, others who somehow survived several missions, are just the bees knees. Ace guys.

Re WW II, Years ago I read the Arms of Krupt dealing with Krupt steel works in Germany. In early history say the Italians and French went to war. The winner was decided by who killed the most Germans. The Germans got tired of this and built a bigger cannon that could shoot further.

Later in the book the Germans were building tanks without the cannons on them and getting them passed as farm tractors after WWI.

Communist "elections" are like GOP run Florida "elections."
