It's true that the US does not advocate those policies any more, but that's as much due to their ineffectiveness as to their supposed immorality.

Killing is killing. Pimple-faced 18 year olds too slow to dodge the draft (i.e. "innocent" soldiers) have just as much a right to life as do babies, women, children and other "innocent" civilians.

My reason for pointing this out is not to say that no war / violence is "justified", but only to make it clear that when you fight fire with fire, you use fire, not water. We should have no delusions as to how our military actions are perceived by the people who bear the brunt of them. If it's natural for us to "fight back", it's natural for them to "fight back" as well, as we share human nature.
