michael, Re: They say things like this time we must do this or we will fall hopelessly behind in the next up cycle

That was what Barrett said last year but Intel is now forced to back down because the next up cycle is not here and no one knows when it will be. Where is the money and where is the demand ?

Hi Mike,

I think you've hit on the central theme of what will drive the next upgrade cycle.

First off DSL is much more generally available.

Secondly applications that were VERY expensive just 2 years ago are now - nolonger rocket science:

1) WiFi zones
2)networks with routers and servers are now available combined for less than $2,000
3)Intenet / web-based applications are now SOP for many.
4)Thin clients @$485. per workstaion
5) I'm installing at both my dealerships a fiber optic network which will give all managers dsl internet and all workers PC's for 25 % of the mainframe we're about to outgrow at 25% of the cost of the (small)mainframe we bought 12 years ago and took forever to pay off.

Additionally my monthly software bill will be under $1000 per month and I'm currewntly paying over 3500 per month.I'm hoping to accelerate the billing to take advantage of the 30% depreciation in the first year (hopefully this year). Our software vendor says they are booked up till mid february for the install and training.

I think Intels Craig Barrett nailed it on the head when he said he sees a pickup early in 03.

We'll be buying over 40 PC's from Mr Dell (keeping our money in Texas is close to godliness).ggg

Our Service Dept will have double 18 inch flat panel displays : one for the RO write up and one for history review. This will help in diagnosis and assist customers in determining recomended maintainance for their vehicles well being.

It is 3-4 times as nice a setup and at one quarter the price.

Technology has advanced and become so cheap that huge implemantation waves will work down into smaller business applications - they actually justify the move thru economic savings.

That my friend is so good you cannot argue against it.

It saves you money -makes everyone work more productively AND its expense is justified by the savings.

THE PRODUCTIVITY GAIN IS A NICE PLUS AT NO EXPENSE !!!

IN SHORT IT IS A NO BRAINER !!!!!

ALL BECAUSE COST HAS COME DOWN TO JUSTIFY THE IMPLEMENTATION !!

Technology is exponential - to not believe and bet on it - is to defy the most dominant megatrend of our generation.

I rest my case.

Bob
