Dolphins Contact Carter
October 19th, 2002
Todd Archer reports for the Palm Beach Post that the Dolphins have made contact with former Minnesota Vikings WR Cris Carter about the possibility of joining the team if Oronde Gadsden undergoes season-ending surgery on his left wrist.

Dolphins Senior Vice President Rick Spielman said he wanted to see what kind of shape Carter is in before they would sign him.

The Dolphins had six receivers in for work outs Friday, Reidel Anthony, Sean Dawkins, Chris Coleman, Chris Jackson, Chris Sanders and Na Brown. One from that group would likely be signed if Carter doesn't work out.

Gadsden Done...and Gone?
October 19th, 2002
Alex Marvez reports for the Sun Sentinel that WR Oronde Gadsden has reportedly elected to undergo season-ending surgery on his left wrist after being unable to reach a contract extension Friday with the Miami Dolphins. "We wanted to get an extension as injury protection, but they offered a contract that should have gone to the 51st player on the roster instead of Oronde," said Michael Todd, Gadsden's agent. Miami VP of football operations and player personnel, Rick Spielman, said he hopes to change Gadsden's mind about the surgery at a meeting today.

Parcells Feels Hit On Chambers Didn't Merit Suspension
October 19th, 2002
Bill Parcells-- "I agree with (Broncos coach) Mike Shanahan, definitely. I don't think there was any intent there. Hey, this is a split-second decision. We have the advantage of watching these things in slow motion. Being down there on the field, do you know how fast this stuff happens? You have to make a snap judgment. This guy's told to play through the receiver to the ball. That's how he's coached. You're told to separate the receiver from the football if you can with a good aggressive play. If someone can prove to me that that was intentional, then he should be suspended, but I think the kid's just playing on his instincts. He's going in there, he's trying to knock the ball loose from Chambers. And I think that when you suspend a player for a week, that's one-sixteenth of his salary, and I think that's pretty stiff for a judgment that is a very difficult one to make."

Chambers Update
October 19th, 2002
ESPN.com's John Clayton reports Miami Dolphins WR Chris Chambers (concussion) will be a game-time decision Sunday. He did a little work Friday at practice.

Gadsden's Season Looks To Be Over
October 18th, 2002
Dante Aligheri of Pro Football Talk reports: "Even though the decision has supposedly not been made, several sources have told us that Dolphin receiver Oronde Gadsden will have season ending wrist surgery once the swelling in his wrist subsides. Even though all parties are hoping that the surgery can be avoided, it does not look good for the Big Handed One to continue his season in 2002."
Note from PhinZone Editor: Orande Gadsden becomes a free agent at the end of the 2002 season so he may have played his last game for the Miami Dolphins if he is indeed out for the year with his wrist injury.

However...
Len Pasquarelli reports for ESPN.com Gadsden may attempt to play through the pain and delay his wrist surgery. Delaying his surgery could cost him in next year's free agent market.

DolphinsDigest.com reports that after seeking a second opinion in Dallas this week in which doctors there confirmed he did not need surgery at this time, Gadsden said "I'm going to try to play it out, go out there and see what I can do. There's a lot that goes into making a decision like this."

In the same article, they go on to quote Gadsden as saying, "I definitely don't want to make a hasty decision and do something I would regret. From a medical standpoint, it's swollen. When the swelling subsides and goes down, I can make a better decision. Given the aggressive treatment, I'm going to go out there and see what I can do. I'll assess all of the information after that."

Either way, Gadsden will not play against the Bills this weekend.

I've watched ESPN and there are several who hold the same view I do. That was a good stick - maybe too good and hence the penalty.
