<<I figure that most Muslims are good people who ignore the passages of the Qur'an that advocate hatred and intolerance. >>

Why? Again, what you see as hatred and intolerance may be what many Muslims see as appropriate treatment of non-believers.

<<Are you saying that that I am viewing the Qur'an through rose-colored lenses--that it is, on balance, an evil book and that Muslims are, in aggregate evil people? >>

I would say that you seem to be attempting to use the "reasonable person" standard of US law to decipher and interpret the Quran in a modern, temperate tone, and that is far from the way most muslinms would read it.

OT to Tom,

You have to read the Sunnah to understand the Quran. Reading Quran by itself will confuse you, you will find one sentence contradicting some other.

OT Tom,
People want to use excuses to justify their own views of people who are of a different religious or race.
Racism seems to be a natural feeling; it seems even in educated societies like the USA, it can't be avoided.

Racism is there just waiting for an excuse to come to the surface. Now the excuse is there. It has happened before over and over again in history and there seems to be nothing new here.

I seriously doubt that US citizens of Arab background have any kind of high crime rate. My observation is that most are educated professionals or businessmen....who at this time may be objects of hatred or suspicion.

When/IF people start getting labelled as good or evil based upon their religion, that would be a troubling sign. Hopefully, these kinds of emotions are temporary.
I would also point out that western society, including the US, is the most tolerant in the world. The danger is simply that it starts going backwards.

btw--you make very good points.
